The refrigerant is picking up that thermal energy from all the others outside taking that to the compressor the compressor compresses it and squeeze that together and forces it out towards the indoor unit now a lot of people say well what about in the wintertime the air is cold there's no energy in there how do you take energy from the air there well actually that air still has a lot of energy in there and certainly enough to be extracted by a heat pump as long as the air is above minus 273 degrees Celsius and there is energy in that air which can be extracted and obviously we're not going to be going down to that temperature in our climate now the reason you can extract thermal energy from the air depending on the temperature that is because the boiling point of the refrigerant is very low so if we look at water here as we know water boils at 100 degrees Celsius or there abouts at about 212 degrees Fahrenheit and let's look at some some refrigerants using heat pumps!
so refrigerant r134a which is very common so that has a boiling point of minus 26 degrees Celsius or minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit obviously that's very low so then we've got our one free one r410a even and that has a boiling point of minus 48 degrees Celsius of minus 55 degrees Fahrenheit so obviously you can see that there's huge amount of energy in the air because boiling points of these refrigerants are so low so as long as the air temperature outside is above these boiling points then you can extract the energy from this air and move it across and into the inside of your of your building but he pumps generally work off of electricity the compressor is powered by electricity so the higher the temperature of the air then the greater the efficiency so once you get down to kind of maybe just above this boiling point here then it's going to is not gonna be very cost effective or efficient to actually run this system however you can still extract energy so it will work will just cost you quite a lot of money to run it at this temperature alright that's it for this video I hope you've enjoyed it and it helped you please don't forget to subscribe like and share and if you have any comments please leave them in a comment section below and also don't forget to check out a website the engineering mindset comm once again thank you very much for watching.
